Honored as the first cinematographer in the FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) Hall of Fame, Romeo “Romy” V.
Vitug (1937-2024; b. Floridablanca, Pampanga) had his roots in photojournalism. He worked for two news publications in the sixties and briefly trained as a newsreel cameraman before moving to cinematography in the seventies.
One of his most acclaimed works in photography is his coverage of the Black Nazarene procession, which won first prize in the color photo essay section of the 1965 photo contest, organized by Asia Magazine. His biography in the catalog of the landmark 5 Photographers exhibition in 1967 notes that his “one obsession” is the uplifting of photography as an art form.
